Owner, LaShawn Raybon, has had a lifetime love affair with cooking. Any chance she get's you can find her in the kitchen creating something wonderful. She is known for her gumbo, mixed greens, pound cakes, and her never say no attitude, "If I can't make it, I'll learn to." LaShawn never thought she was a baker. A single mother of a son and daughter, LaShawn has done everything from fashion design to Hip Hop, graphics and administrative work to teaching Sunday school, with only on goal, "Lord, let me be a blessing to you and all that surround me." Taking one Pound Cake recipe and turning it into over 35 Cakes by the POUND Bay Area creations, LaShawn's only formal training has been that of her family and friends. Her family owned the Golden Lily Restaurant in the San Francisco Fillmore district in the mid-80s, a cross between a juke joint and family style restaurant. Fond memories of Bobby Blue Bland playing and everyone cheerful with food everywhere."I've been searching my whole life for that experience. And well, I figure, why not create it myself." This is what I Am Cafe is set to accomplish. And we're doing it one pound slice and a time!
